This Sunday is a mandatory payout day at Santa Anita for the Rainbow Pick Six.

We wish you good luck if you take a stab at the jackpot. But we will take a look at a few races that we like, one play of ours will start off the card and the second will be in the Rainbow Pick 6 sequence.

Race 1 ~ Maiden Special Weight 61k

4 1/2 Furlongs on Dirt

6 horses will run in this 2 year old state bred maiden special weight event including one filly. The horse breaking from the outside is a filly for trainer Doug O’Neill. #6 Swanning is the only horse in this race that has the experience of running in a race.

This experience for 2 year olds is a huge advantage. Often times the horses in these 2 year old races run really well with a race under their belt. #6 Swanning broke out a little at the start in her first race at Santa Anita in April and managed to finish 3rd in her initial start.

Race 2 ~ OC 62k/N2X

6 Furlongs on Turf

6 fillies and mares are going 6 furlongs on the turf. This field has some speedy rivals. The pace should be fast in this optional claimer. Some horses have speed and some horses have graded stakes speed. The horse breaking from the rail has graded stakes speed. #1 Five Pics Please lead all the way up to the final few yards in the grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita in February.

Going Global is a fine horse who grabbed her right before the wire that day. Today the field does have early pace but doesn’t have the level of competition she faced back in February. Adding lasix back today should only help.

Race 6 ~ Maiden Special Weight 61k

1 Mile on Dirt

This contest has 6 horses signed on to compete for a purse of $61,000. Bob Baffert sends out two horses in here including one American Pharaoh colt that was purchased for a cool 1.3 mill at the Keeneland September 2019 sale. His other runner is making his second career start going from turf to dirt and stretching out to a mile this time.

We are going to pass on these two Baffert runners today. Baffert excels with dirt horses. When he starts a runner on the turf this should raise a red flag. His first time starter #3 American Admiral may be talented enough to win this race, but we will look in another direction. Baffert wins a lot first time out (29%), but when he starts his horses at a mile his numbers drop to (22%).

#2 Mr. Impossible is getting back on the dirt after trying the turf last out. His first three try’s on dirt he lost to 3 stakes horses in each of his 3 starts.

#5 Beyond Brilliant is trying dirt for the first time today after two starts on the turf. Last race is a little concerning that he lost as the heavy favorite in a small field, but this horse has dirt in its blood and the surface switch and going two turns could be what this guy wants.

Race 7 ~ OC 40k/N1X

6 1/2 Furlongs on Turf

Race 7 has 8 horses racing on the turf. Our pick is a speedy filly making her second start off an 11 month layoff. This is the #7 Lofty. Young jockey Jessica Pyfer has been excellent getting her horses out of the gate. This race doesn’t look to have many horses that can match this filly’s early speed. She consistently goes 21 and 44 and with a freshening under her belt she might be able to carry her speed the 6 1/2 furlongs today.

Her last race back in April she ran a respectable 3rd off the long layoff. Today we will look for her to improve off that effort and get the winner’s share of the $63,000 purse.
