Santa Anita has carded 9 races this first Sunday in May.  The day after hall of famer Bob Baffert trainee Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby.

5 turf races will be run today along with one 2 year old race going 4 1/2 furlongs.

Race 5 ~ OC 100k/N1X

6 Furlongs on Turf

6 horses will run in this turf event.  #2 Whatmakessammyrun is shipping in from Florida.  This year this colt has run at Gulfstream Park as well as Tampa Bay Downs.   He ran well off the bench in the 75k optional claimer at Gulfstream but backpedalled against tougher in the stakes race at Tampa.

He is cutting back from 1 mile to six furlongs and the class relief should help this guy out immensely.

#5 Mohawk King is making his first start in North America for trainer Simon Callaghan.  He won twice across the pond once on synthetic and once on grass.  This colt has some back class, running in stakes races over in England and if this guy is ready it should be able to handle this competition.

 

 

6 Furlongs  on Dirt

8 fillies are competing for their very first win of their careers in this maiden special weight 6 furlong sprint.  Two horse exit a key race.  Race 6 back on February 26, 2021, Soothsay broke her maiden impressively and then went on to win the Santa Anita Oaks.

#1 Ginja  makes her 3rd career start for 7 time Kentucky Derby winning trainer Bob Baffert.  She had the lead in her debut and finished 4th (replay above).  Next out she ran 2nd to Stressed (5 horse in replay) now she will try to get her diploma in her third start.

Trainer Johnny Wong had the race favorite in the February 26th race, #8 Just Distorted.  This gal was making her career debut that day and ran a nice 2nd to the eventual Santa Anita Oaks champion.

She draws a nice outside post to sit off the inside speed.  Wong does well second time out with maidens he’s hitting at 25%.  This gal got unlucky facing Soothsay in her first start.  She will try to graduate off of the freshening today.
