Santa Anita Best Bets

Santa Anita Free picks

10 races are scheduled for today Sunday April 25 at Santa Anita Racetrack.  Today’s feature is The Singletary.  This will be race 9 on the card and will have 6 horses running for a purse of 100k.

Overall is a solid racing day at The Great Race Place Santa Anita.  There is a nice mix of dirt and turf racing scheduled.

We like to remind you to check in with us every race day because we give out our free Santa Anita picks.

You can check here for the forecast at Santa Anita.

Race 2 ~ Moc 50000

1 Mile on Dirt

This style of maiden optional claiming race has been showing up recently at Santa Anita.  These conditions are written for fillies and mares 3 year olds and up, who were bought at auction for $150,000 or less.  However, horses still can run in this race if their purchase price exceeded the $150,000 price tag.  If these horses are making their 5th start or more these horses are eligible or a horse can be entered for a claiming price of 50k.

In this race all 5 runners are protected.  The #5 Eyes Open is making her 6th career start for the Dan Blacker barn.  She tried turf once and that didn’t go well finishing dead last in a field of 8.

In her dirt races she hasn’t found the winner’s circle yet, but that might have to do with the competition she has been facing.  Right before her turf attempt she faced As Time Goes by, the horse who ran second to Swiss Skydiver in the (G1) Beholder Mile and won The (G2) Santa Margarita yesterday at Santa Anita.

Last race she competed against the boys and ran into another well thought of Bob Baffert horse Triple Tap.  Triple Tap is a half to Triple Crown super horse American Pharaoh.

Today’s race is a softer spot than what she has been facing along with the nice outside draw we expect her to get her picture taken today.

10 Horse Handicapping Tips You Need To Know About

Race 3 ~ Maiden Special Weight 61k

1 1/8 Miles on Turf

This race is for maiden fillies and mares 3 years old and up.  Trainer Phil D’Amato sends out a 4 year old filly #3 Witch Moon who lost by a head last out going 1 1/4 miles over the same Santa Anita turf course.

This gal started her career in Saratoga running two races then shipped up to Woodbine for a race then ended up in Southern California.  She will be making her third start this year and looks to be improving.

D’Amato added blinkers and she finished 4th in her first start as a 4yo and followed that up with the second place finish we mentioned above.

#7 Cider Apple began her career over in Great Britain.  She is also making her 3rd start this year.  She has run against some good competitors in her races in the states.

Trainer Jeff Mullins and jockey Tyler Baze will try to get this 3yo her first career victory.  She has hit the board a lot in her career 4 times she finished second in 6 starts.  Hopefully this seconditis isn’t a mental thing and it’s just a case of tough luck against better horses.

This filly shows talent and in this spot she should be in the mix for the win.

Race 6 ~ OC 20k/N1X

5 1/2 Furlongs on Dirt

Trainer Peter Miller has #6 Bench Judge switching surfaces and trying dirt for the first time.  This gelding is on a two race winning streak on turf.  This guy does have off an the pace running style that would fit in this contest but trying dirt for the first time we will take a wait-and-see approach.

Our top selection is the runner to its outside the Carla Gaines runner #7 Coalinga Road.  This gelding also likes coming off the pace and this running style should fit perfectly in a race loaded with pace on its inside.

The outside draw should let jockey Umberto Rispoli find a nice trip and make one run late to zoom by in the lane.

#7 Coalinga Road Has run on dirt in its last three starts.  The last two of the starts went a mile and resulted in 2nd place finishes.  Today with the speed in this race and the cutback to 5.5 furlongs this should help him in this spot.

Race 7 ~ Maiden Special Weight 61k

6 1/2 Furlongs on Turf

This race is for state bred horses 3 years old and up.  We will look at another Dan Blacker trainee, first time starter #4 Auspicious Style.  Dan Blacker isn’t really known as a first time out winner.  He is (0-10) so far this year according to the DRF.

Jockey Flavian Prat rides this colt out of Vronsky.  This horse is bread for turf and when Prat and Blacker team up they win at a .27% rate overall.  If this first timer is ready to run today, this horse should be on your ticket.

Trainer Carla Gaines and jockey Umberto Rispoli might win two races in a row with Coalinga Road and  #10 Minister Shane.  This second time starter had a little trouble in its first start.  It overcame the problems and still finished a respectable 5th 3 lengths off the winner.

Gaines does well with her second out runners hitting at 18%.  This horse was bet a little first out and showed ability in its first race.   This gelding has plenty of room to improve and as we mentioned jockey Rispoli sticks around to ride again.

Santa Anita Play Of The Day

***We make our selections on a theoretical $20 base wager.  We will give out $20 daily double wagers on this website.  Remember, these wagers are theoretical and we use a $20 wager for two reasons.  Firstly, because our plays usually run between $40-$60, which is a reasonable bankroll and secondly it’s easy to keep track of our winnings and loses per month. ***

Lets fire a daily double(s), because that’s what we do.
