Pimlico Race Course has a 14 race card today.  The Preakness stakes is the feature race and the second jewel of horse racing’s triple crown.

Race 12 ~ The Dinner Party Stakes (G1)

1 1/16 Miles on Turf

8 horses are scheduled to go 1 mile and a 1/16 on the turf, racing for a purse of $250,000.  This field has plenty of horses that look like they are comfortable racing off the pace.  This set up could be very favorable to the #1 Somelikeithotbrown.  This horse exits the same race as the #7 Flying Scotsman.

#7 Flying Scotsman looks like the other horse that has some early lick.   Last race in the Makers Mile #1 Somelikeithotbrown beat him to the lead only to get gooned up by a speedy rival breaking from the one hole.

The pace shouldn’t be as fast and it looks like #1 Somelikeithotbrown can wire this field.  If jockey Jose Ortiz sends him from the rail he could have the #7 Flying Scotsman in chase mode the whole race.

This field has some talented runners , but a lone speed horse is dangerous in any race.

Race 13 ~ The Preakness Stakes

1 3/16 Miles on Dirt

 

Everyone has watched the Kentucky Derby by now and has probably had enough of the controversy surrounding the winner #3 Medina Spirit.

Trainer Bob Baffert has entered two horses in this race and both are speed horses.  It is very unlikely that two hall of fame riders working for a hall of fame trainer will find themselves dueling for the lead in a prestigious race like the Preakness.

#3 Medina Spirit is the likely candidate for the lead in this race.  He does have other speed in this field, but with an ideal inner post he should send hard for the front.  This horse has won each time he has made the lead and has been impossible so far to pass him.

#8 Unbridled Honor is a “new shooter” in this race shipping in from Lexington, Ky for trainer Todd Pletcher.  Luis Saez gets the mount and will look to run by the front runners late to secure a victory for his connections.

The 3 year old grey colt looks like he is improving with every race.  His last out second place finish in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland is his best effort so far.  That race he closed well into fast fractions of 22.1 and 45.4 going a mile and a 1/16.

This race could see a few horses send early and quicken the pace.  If that happens look for #8 Unbridled Honor to come running late.
